I started beading about fifteen years ago. I think it was the colours and shapes that were the big attraction—the skill of bead manufacturers is something if which I am in awe! My first creations were simple strung bead necklaces, but I soon discovered that there is a lot more to beadwork than just stringing! I taught myself the art of French Beading, starting with tiny individual flowers and that has now developed into the wedding bouquets that are continually increasing in popularity. There are a lot of fantastic bead artists whose work I have admired and been inspired by, but I have always created my own designs for all my flowers. I like to examine a real flower and work out how I can transform nature’s construction into a bead pattern, re-creating each petal, sepal, leaf and so forth to make something as close to reality as possible.

I moved from French Beading to learning off-loom weaving techniques: peyote stitch, brick stitch, herringbone, square stitch and to name a few. Using these techniques I quickly began to develop far more sophisticated pieces of jewellery. I still remain the best advertising for my jewellery designs and the pieces that I wear seem to elicit admiration from friends and strangers alike!

My miniature bead tutus started as an experimental means of teaching myself circular and tubular peyote stitch and a way of acknowledging my love of ballet, but they have now taken on a life of their own. From this base my interest in creating sculptural beadwork grew. Some of the miniature ballet costumes and dresses I have created can be seen on the Bead Tutus website.

I started to look at selling my work after encouragement from friends and family. I added the shopping functionality to my website, I have sold through craft shops and at craft fairs. I love having the opportunity to meet and get to know the people who buy from me, whether online or in person. Their ideas and comments inspire me to create more and I gain an immense satisfaction from the process of translating someone’s vision into an object that they will (hopefully) treasure!

In more recent years, I have had some success in entering competitions. During 2007 I have been awarded first prize for a Christmas ornament design (Beadworkers Guild Competition), winner and finalist places for my entries in the Beaded Bag competition run by Beadwork magazine in the USA, and first prize for the Swarovski BWG competition to design a handbag charm. I love rising to the challenge of designing to a theme and having the chance to see the fabulous work that other bead artists have created is a real privilege.

I hope that gives you an insight into my passion for beadwork and I hope that you will enjoy exploring my website and sharing that passion.
